Definition : Bailiff

A professional and a legal officer, member of the “Chambre des huissiers de justice du Québec” (Québec Chamber of Justice Bailiffs), whose mission it is to:

  •  Serve (usually by remitting by hand to the recipient ) a formal notice;
  •  Serve any proceeding emanating from a court
  •  Execute court decisions (judgment, seizure, judicial sale or sale under judicial authority, expulsion);
  •  Make material findings, on the basis of an ascertainment, at the request of the court or of an individual (written description of an event or of a situation);
  •  Amicably recover a claim at the request of a client and to obtain the voluntary remittance of property.
